At the end of the year 2011, almost 7`000 biogas plants with an installed electrical output of around 2`700 MW will be operated in Germany. As a member of the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture the Bavarian State Research centre (LfL) focuses on current and future issues of land use and nutrition, including quality management in production. The LfL`s work is based on problem- and application oriented research and system development. Amongst others, the main research focuses on the investigation of the Biogas process, which is supported by the Renewable Energies Act (EEG). In the area of nutrient dynamics, fertilization and environmental protection the Institute for Agroecology, Organic Farming and Soil Protection (LfL IAB) is responsible for the evaluation of risks and benefits arising from the use of biogas residues in agriculture.
